In more ways than one, living through a pandemic has certainly brought a shift in pretty much all aspects of my life. We all know 2020 was one of the shittiest years OF. ALL. TIME. A global pandemic, racial injustice, a crazy important election year, the list goes on. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t caught up in personal battles as well as the global battles we were all dealing with. I used to be so obsessed with controlling situations, having the highest expectations for those around me, thinking about how others perceived me, etc. And 2020 proved that I just couldn’t keep up with it anymore. I was constantly feeling stressed over things I really couldn’t control. Plus, the uncertainty of the world was enough to send me into a miserable hole. I realized it was time to change my attitude: towards people, places, relationships, friendships, and life in general. Changing your mindset doesn’t happen overnight. It takes practice, patience, and a whole lot of trial and error. I’ve found that a few things work for me when I literally need to snap out of my bad attitude/habits and start fresh. A few ways to change your attitude Breathe — there’s really something to be said about what a few deep breaths can do. Ever since I started doing yoga, I’ve learned the importance of breathwork, and in stressful situations, I always come back to the breathe. CBD — On days where I’m just REALLY lacking a good attitude (mainly due to anxiety), I reach for my Equilibria CBD drops. They are, what I like to call, my instant dose of calm. Taking a drop full of CBD instantly helps calm me down, and allows me to refocus my attention (and attitude) elsewhere. PS: If you’re interested in Equilibria, you can shop here — my code danamannarino will get you 15% off your purchase! Daily Gratitude — When I get home from my morning walk, I sit at my desk and write down one thing I’m grateful for in that very moment. Whether it’s big or small, it always brings a smile to my face. Thinking about things that make you GRATEFUL really helps put life into perspective. Once I write that down, it helps set the tone for a positive attitude. Move your body — If I’m feeling down, I try to get a workout in of some sort. Whether it’s yoga or a full body class, getting your heart rate up reminds you of YOUR POWER, YOUR STRENGTH. Get inspired — Living on the Upper East Side has really brought so much joy and inspiration into my life. Thanks to my daily walks, I’m generally just a happier person thanks to the people I see walking around the neighborhood. Plus, there’s too many cute restaurants and shops — SO MUCH CUTE LIL INSPO!!! Whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or just have a bad effing attitude, I try to go back to these tactics that pull me out of my funk immediately. Even though they usually don’t change the actual situation or what I can control, I feel a sense of calm…almost like a little reset button. So I hope they help you too, and at the end of the day: YOU GOT THIS!!! photo by allie provost
Intentional was one of my words for 2021. Spending a lot of my time in front of a computer or on my phone means that I have a lot of over-exposure to highlight reels. I find myself scrolling and watching Instagram Story after Instagram Story. And after a while, it makes me become irritated with my own life. We live in a world where everyone is sharing their accomplishments — “look at the workout I just did!”, “omg I just got this bag!”, and “I’m engaged!!!” — and I think it starts to take a toll on us. I know I’m guilty of sharing the good things. And it’s something I shouldn’t even have to feel guilty about. If I’m having a good day, you’re going to see me posting more on my platforms because I’m in a good mood. If I’m having a bad day, I’m more likely going to be silent because I just don’t feel like sharing. I’m here to be the first one to tell you (and quite frankly, myself) that seeing other people’s accomplishments on social media are NOT checkpoints for your own life. In a way, we’re so caught up in what everyone else is doing that we lose sight of our own lives. And that’s where being intentional comes into play. I’ve been waking up every day with the intention to be more intentional . It’s something I 1000% need to make sure I’m aware of. More intentional with my morning routine. More intentional with projects at work. More intentional with my yoga practice. More intentional with my words in blog posts. More intentional with my thoughts. More intentional with my social media. More intentional with my skin care routine. More intentional with how much water I’m drinking. More intentional with my relationships/friendships. More intentional with my thoughts, feelings, and actions. Being intentional allows you to be more aware. More present. More in tune with what YOU need, and the energy you want to give off to those around you. Instead of living like we’re on autopilot, living with intentions really puts a lot into perspective. If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we need to live life a little bit differently than we’re used to. Right now is the perfect time to take things day by day. So I challenge you to wake up and set some sort of intention. Or set the intention to go through your day intentionally . I promise your thoughts will shift dramatically! photos by allie provost
If you remember, SoulCycle was A HUGE part of my life since 2014. Once my favorite instructor/friend moved to London, I really didn’t go to SoulCycle my usual 4-5x a week. In turn, I stopped working out. I tried a lot of other workouts, and didn’t love them either. I really just enjoyed being on a bike at SoulCycle. I loved walking into a studio and feeling happy – seeing friends, getting a good sweat sesh in – it was great. When I started dating Nick, yoga naturally became a bigger part of my routine (Nick is a yoga teacher). He also really loves working out, so we did that together a lot too. Then COVID-19 hit us like a ton of bricks. Thankfully, Nick taught yoga classes on Instagram Live 5 days a week. I’d be in another room taking his class. It definitely kept me busy, active, and was an AMAZING way to relieve the stress of a pandemic. I think that might have been my saving grace from March-June. I also got really strong during that time. But, like most things, reality set back in and I was really missing being on a bike. Then I was introduced to MYX Fitness . In total transparency, MYX Fitness reached out to work together. In exchange for their product, I would post to Instagram + Stories. I still feel like I wanted to write a full review of the bike since 1. It’s an investment for you if you purchase and 2. I have A LOT of thoughts. So when the team did reach out, I was like 10000% YES. I didn’t hesitate. Spin was a huge part of my work out routine, I missed it SO much since the pandemic started. It was pretty much the only cardio I did — I’m really not big on burpees, jumping jacks, etc. I pretty much begged Nick to let me get the bike delivered to his apartment (hehe, sorry babe). When he agreed, I was SO excited for it to arrive. I was definitely impressed with how quick the delivery was after hearing nightmare stories about other bikes. Everything was pretty seamless: The bike came almost fully assembled — We just had to put the monitor on and unpack the weights. Ok, now let’s talk about what else I like about the MYX Fitness bike : Great classes, ranging from 10 minutes to 45 minutes Large range of classes — 10 minutes to 45 minutes Yoga, meditation, stretching, dance, etc. Instructors are great! Different levels of difficulty which makes it nice for beginners Fits in a New York City apartment! class breakdown There are four types of classes you can take — Bike, Floor, Mindful, and Cross Training. Like I mentioned before there are different level classes (1 being the easiest, 3 being the most advance). At the beginning, I pretty much stuck to level 2 classes for the bike while I got familiar with the instructors and types of classes. Since I’ve been doing A LOT of yoga, I was really pleasantly surprised to see all of the different types available (yes, there’s even yoga for indigestion). Whether it’s a floor workout followed by yoga, just a meditation before bed, or spin followed by yoga…there’s a combination that will work for you! Some of my favorite classes are the themed rides (like 90s Hip Hop). overall thoughts Since it’s looking like group fitness might not be up and running any time soon, I definitely recommend an at home bike. The MYX bike offers competitive pricing in terms of the equipment and then the monthly subscription (which I believe all other companies also charge monthly fees). The monthly membership is $29 — compared to Peloton at $39/month for the subscription. I think if you’re OK with working out at home, looking for new work outs that are constantly updated, and an overall great system…then MYX Fitness is for you. photos by allie provost
For whatever reason hitting publish on this post makes me feel nervous. But hey, I guess that’s what happens when you’re dealing with your mental health. I wrote this post on Instagram last week about how I believe I’m dealing with anxiety. On the outside, I’m a totally “normal” human being that leads a normal and great life. On the inside, my thoughts and fears get the best of me. a little background When I really look back on my life, even from a young age, I think I’ve always been an anxious and sensitive person. When I was a baby, my mom said I would cry at songs that had sad melodies (like a Chase Bank commercial). When I was a little older, I remember seeing something on an episode of the show “ER” that had to do with 2 younger kids losing their parents in a car accident. I swear from that moment on, I’ve always been VERY anxious about losing my parents. As I got older, I realized that even though I loved being social, I didn’t like to do ANYTHING by myself. I wouldn’t even walk to the vending machine by myself. It made me super uncomfortable. nothing was wrong I never took the time to truly address my thoughts and feelings. I always thought that since I have and always had an amazing life, that I was fine. Nothing was wrong, and these were just normal thoughts. I didn’t realize the IMPACT these thoughts were having in my life over the years. always thinking I believe my anxiety comes from all of the unwarranted thoughts. Sure, everyone goes through their shit. We’ve ALL had bad things happen to us. We’ve ALL been through ups and downs, break ups, make ups, tragedies, etc. But looking back on it, I don’t think I do a good job at addressing or coping with situations. I’m ALWAYS thinking. Or should I say OVERTHINKING. It’s something I’ve always done. I always think I’m doing something wrong — at work, at home, in my relationships/friendships. When the slightest thing, issue, fight, etc. happens, I can’t shake the feeling that it’s the absolute end of the world. Or that I’m not doing enough. Or that whoever is involved in the situation hates me. Although I admit I’m fairly selfish, I still am a huge people pleaser at the end of the day. So when I think something is wrong, it kills me. Even if I didn’t necessarily do anything. when did i realize i had anxiety? I think over the last few months. A goal of mine is to be more aware, and I’ve definitely been more aware that my thoughts have been affecting my every day life. So then I started noticing things that trigger these thoughts and, therefore, my anxiety. In the past, I don’t think I wanted to believe I could be dealing with mental health issues. Like how could I have issues? I have a lot of really great things going for me. I have a lot of great people in my life, people that I WANT around. But I don’t think that’s how mental health issues work. For me, that’s the first step in figuring this whole thing out. Breathing has been a big helper in this. Just a couple of techniques and deep breaths have helped tremendously. I’m working on realizing that my thoughts are not facts. That it’s OK to be anxious, as long as I can control it. That I need to take things one step at a time. why i want to talk now? In keeping up with transparency, this is something that’s part of my life. So I’m going to tell you about it. I also want to continue to talk to you about things. Maybe you’re also dealing with anxiety. Maybe you have been for a very long time. Maybe you have amazing things that have worked for you that might work for me. I’ve always had a thing for mental health. I’ve always been fascinated by the mind, mental diseases, and how society plays a role in it. Social media is a blessing and a curse. While I don’t think it was the CAUSE of my anxiety, it certainly plays a role in it. While I know it’s just a highlight reel for most people, sometimes my thoughts get the best of me while looking through my feed…which makes me want to throw my phone. But on the other hand, I LOVE sharing with you. And I love sharing REAL things with you. The stigma around mental health needs to be broken. Just because I believe I have anxiety, doesn’t mean I’m not a happy person. So why wouldn’t I talk about it? Too many of us refuse to talk about our feelings and what is impacting our mental health out of fear. Fear of being judged. Fear of being not normal. Fear of having to get help. But for me, that fear “ends” here. And I hope this post encourages it to end for you too. *I’m in no way a doctor, and cannot give any medical advice. If you’re experiencing some of the same things I’m talking about, please reach out to a medical professional.*
This post has been sponsored by Zebra Pen. All thoughts and opinions are my own. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to write. To me, there’s nothing better than putting a pen to paper. That’s why I’ve always been into journaling. I remember spending HOURS at the bookstore, not only to pick up books, but also to pick out a new journal or notebook to write in. Whether I was going to use it for writing stories or to journal my thoughts, there was nothing better to me. There are so many reasons why journaling is therapeutic, but these are the main benefits that I’ve encountered. Anything goes Your journal. Your thoughts. Your way. I love that journaling doesn’t have to follow any kind of structure. For me, I’m usually a neat freak when it comes to writing though – so I ALWAYS try to be as neat as possible. I use the Zebra Sarasa® Grand Gel Retractable Pen . I particularly love the Sarasa Grand because it’s a stylish, affordable, and durable pen. It allows me to write just the way I want. Some days I want to write about what I’m grateful for, and other days I’m feeling stressed and just want to vent with my pen and paper. Helps you realize what you’re grateful for I’ve been writing in a gratitude journal for a while now. It’s a great way to put everyday things into perspective. It’s also an effective way for me to relieve stress, and write down what I’m grateful for. Most of the time, it’s something super small that I’m thankful for: iced coffee, having someone to be with during the pandemic, a job I love (more on that below), fresh baked cookies at night, etc. On the other side, I found myself being super grateful for things like my health, my family and friends’ health, living in New York, etc. Great stress reliever It’s safe to say that over the last few months, things have been super stressful. I went from starting a brand new job in February to working from home a month later. I had never worked from home before. That in itself was an adjustment. And what was even crazier was that my boyfriend and I found ourselves living together during this high-stress time. Journaling allowed me to write all of my thoughts and feelings down (personal and work related), and then I was able to have good conversations about those feelings. With work, things are still stressful as we’re going through a huge reorganization period. Not going to lie, it was really tough for a bit. There was a lot of uncertainty surrounding my job, and what my next steps were. Was I about to be laid off? I used my journal during this time to really get out everything I was feeling. Luckily, I’m on a new path that will only elevate my career, so lately my journal entries have been ones of gratitude and feeling lucky. Perfect for keeping you on a routine Writing something every day has helped me create a consistent routine that instantly boosts my mood. For me, journaling is such a good way to relieve stress. In order for me to write every day, I make sure I keep my notebook and Sarasa® Grand close by. I keep it on my desk with my notebook so that I can write down my thoughts throughout the day. A lot of times, I’m so busy with work, I just write down my to-do lists in my notebook! Since it’s always on my desk, it’s easy to look over, cross things off the list, and be less stressed! Do you keep a journal? Zebra Pen is encouraging people to Choose Different by choosing a stylish pen designed to reflect your own personal style. What benefits do you see when you write down your thoughts and feelings? photos by allie provost
If there’s one thing we can do while self-quarantining, it’s moving our bodies. I’ve always considered myself a fairly active human. During this time, I’ve really loved hearing and seeing more and more people working out at home. It’s really great to see all of our favorite gyms, yoga studios, and cycling work outs trying to help us flatten the curve by providing online work outs. I know a lot of people are sick of other sharing time lapses of their at-home work outs (I admit it’s not the greatest way to show what you’re doing), but I love that people are JUST BEING ACTIVE. I think now more than ever, working out is a complete mental game. Many of us are trying to find our “new normal”. To be completely honest, HIIT work outs have been put on the back burner for me. Why? Because I’m trying to navigate this whole working from home situation. I’m not used to this. I plan on writing a complete post with how I’m feeling about all of this, but it’s kind of hard to put into words. The one thing I’ve been doing 5-6 days out of the week is yoga. It’s been such a game changer for me in the sense that it’s just something we’re doing every day at 5:30PM. It’s basically been part of the routine since we started self-quarantining. After sitting on the couch all day working my 9-to-5, it’s nice to know I have something to look forward to. Yoga REALLY helps open your body up, and it’s SO SO SO helpful in getting out of your head during this time of uncertainty. I also look forward to putting on work out clothes. It’s just a nice change of pace and means it’s time to really kick my butt into gear. I wanted to share a few of my favorite work out gear with you today! gapfit I didn’t have work out clothes one evening, so I popped into Gap after work (OH THE LITTLE THINGS). I just needed pants and a top, but ended up walking out with a few extra goodies. Specifically loved this funnel neck pullover for to/from a class! Right now, Gap is SUPER promotional (as is most of the retail space), so I’d definitely take advantage of what they have to offer. Everything is UP TO 60% off (and some product is even AN ADDITIONAL 20% off). Turn on your JavaScript to view content lululemon I know lululemon is a pretty expensive brand, but I do love their products. Ever since I learned of the brand in college, I remember instantly falling in love with their yoga products and bags. Most recently, I’ve been OBSESSED with their Align pant. I know they don’t really ever have discounts, so I raided the sale section for you guys! I think I’m going to place an order today for the below things! Turn on your JavaScript to view content beyond yoga This brand was pretty new to me, but I found it thanks to the Nordstrom sale a few years back. I got this awesome, flowy off the shoulder long sleeve to wear to and from SoulCycle. I still where it till this day! While I do like their leggings, I mostly shop this brand for to from pieces. Turn on your JavaScript to view content fp movement Obviously when I worked for Free People, I wore a lot of Free People LOL. I didn’t work on the FP Movement brand, but I learned to love the pieces. I own A LOT of FP Movement. I think they do a great job at to/from pieces – can you sense a theme here? I’m really all about the athleisure wear;) Turn on your JavaScript to view content What workouts have you been doing during this time?
It’s safe to say things are a little, well, weird. I gotta be honest, I was the first person to not take this seriously when things seemed to actually be getting serious. But then I noticed how empty the subways were during rush hour. Then my job sent us home to work from home for 2 weeks. Then my favorite stores decided to close for two weeks. Then it was declared a national emergency. Then the shelves of stores were raided. Yeah, it got serious. Up until Sunday, I really just went along with my normal day to day things: I went to a laser appointment, I went to SoulCycle, we went grocery shopping and to Bed Bath and Beyond, I went to hang out with my cousin (so I had to take the train up there). But almost overnight, I realized just how important social distancing is at a time like this. limit your social engagements This is probably the most important thing for us to be doing right now. Yet, I’m noticing a lot of people still crowding restaurants and bars , and I couldn’t help but think of how many people are just incubating this virus. I’m really seeing that a lot of people just aren’t caring just because they feel fine. I always think about my parents, who are over 60, and my 97 year old grandma. I’m not about to be the reason why someone else gets this virus just because I’m healthy and could probably easily fight off the infection. help where you can Whether it’s donating to local food banks or charities that will provide students with meals while their schools are closed. I took one little different approach when I learned Broadway went dark. I was supposed to see SIX: The Musical on Friday, but since all shows have been canceled, I decided to donate my refunded ticket to The Actors Fund. When you think about just how many people are not working right now (actors, ushers, stagehands, dressers, bartenders, etc.), you can’t help but want to help them! Since I’m so in love with Broadway, it just made sense. There’s obviously more I’d like to do though! I’ve also been seeing some people offering to help their elderly neighbors or someone who could potentially get really affected by the virus. I love seeing the good come out in people during this time! check on yourself This is obviously a super weird time. We don’t really know what’s going on or for how long this is going to be our life. I know we always preach “self care”, but this is something we should take seriously. Yes, take care of your skin, but also to really take the time to check in on yourself. See how you’re feeling. Are you extra tired? Are you bored? Are you drinking enough water? Do you need to take a 10 minute walk outside? Little tweaks to what you’re doing while you’re home can help make this time a lot better. check on your friends Obviously this is super important. Hop on a FaceTime call if you can’t be around your friends during this time. Send a text to see what they’re up to. Suggest a book or TV show for them to watch. Just be there for each other! binge watch Yup. Probably the most acceptable time to do absolutely nothing and start binge watching. I just started watching Schitt’s Creek, and I’m so happy I have so many seasons to watch, HA! Find something new, and just BINGE. learn something Guys, I COOKED something. Yup, it’s true. I COOKED. Me and the guy wanted to make tacos, and I took it upon myself to actually cook the meat. GASP, I KNOW. And I didn’t hurt myself…or mess it up!!! (YAY ME). I actually didn’t mind cooking at all, so maybe it’s something I’ll take on;) I plan on doing some at home work outs and yoga while I’m working from home too! I also saw a lot of people were taking on needlepointing, baking, and reading. So just find something and DO IT! So if you’re not really taking this whole social distancing thing seriously. YOU SHOULD. We have the rest of our lives to go out and do social things…now is not the time to do them. Learn to be cooped up in your home and help flatten the curve! What are you doing during this time? Share below so we can all get some ideas! photos by allie provost
New year, new lifestyle? I really didn’t want to say that because I very much dislike the “new year, new…” phrase. But hey, if a new year is what I need to give myself a kick in the ass, then so be it. This year, I’m really committing to live an overall healthier lifestyle. I wouldn’t consider myself unhealthy, but I definitely don’t implement many healthy practices. I’m actually fairly lucky to have my genetics in that case, but now that I’m in my 30s, I want to take it more seriously. I took some time to think about what kind of lifestyle I want to life, and then took even MORE time to think about how I’m going to achieve that lifestyle. 7 Ways To Live A Healthier Lifestyle MORE. WATER. This is something I’m trying to be SO mindful of. Before I started being mindful of actually drinking water, I was only mindful of just how LITTLE water I was drinking. Some days I would only drink 1 coffee and a 1 soda. Since I’ve been drinking more water – my skin has felt better, I actually FEEL thirsty so I can drink more (vs. being used to being so dehydrated that I didn’t feel like I needed water). Last week, I took a hot yoga class and didn’t drink a ton of water that day…I felt like CRAP in the class. Two days later, I felt HYDRATED AF…and felt great during the class! So wow, it’s almost like water works;) More yoga Speaking of yoga…we’re getting back into it. During COVID, I was practicing 5 days a week, sometimes more. I was actually in the best shape of my life during that time. While I don’t think I’ll get back to practicing 5-6 days a week, I’m really trying to stick to a schedule of Monday, Wednesday, Saturday. I feel SO incredible (mentally and physically) after a class, so I just need to make sure I’m finding an hour on these days to get to a class. Hot yoga is my absolute favorite – I love sweating more than I would in a regular-temp class! It also feels really great to be part of a little community again. Care/Of Okay this is VERY new to me. I don’t think I’ve consistently taken vitamins ever in my life. Now that I’m an aging 30 year old (*slight sarcasm), I need to take matters into my own hand. I’ve see Care/Of vitamins before, and then I saw Krystal promote them, so I jumped on ordering! I’m a sucker for great packaging and I love that EACH daily packet is personalized. HOW CUTE?! I also love that you take a quiz to figure out just what kind of vitamins you need. For me, I wanted to focus primarily on gut health and digestion (with other factors like living in a city, overall health, and skin coming into play). So I have a pack of 10 vitamins a day that I started taking over the weekend (lol). I will say — they are NOT cheap. I’m not working with them, but they do have a referral program, so you can get 50% off your first order ! Will absolutely report back over the next few weeks and months! Meditation I’ve talked about this app a few times on Instagram and in my newsletter. The Superhuman app is, in my opinion, one of the easiest ways to live a healthier lifestyle. The concept of meditation was really hard for me. I thought you needed to be 10000% completely tuned in and transform your thoughts. And it’s kind of the opposite — it’s just another way of thinking, another way to be mindful, and I love that! So even when your mind wanders, that’s okay! As long as you can find the way back to the meditation, that means you’re doing it! I’m currently doing the 21 Day Challenge and it’s really been helping me stay on top of my intentions for the year. Less consumption I recently read an article that described the information we consume as an IV drip directly to the back of my brain. And when you put it like that, it makes so much sense…and not in a good way. I used to turn the news on as soon as I woke up because I 1. Liked to stay informed and 2. Liked the background noise. But let’s face it, the news is depressing. I’m always the person who thinks the worst case scenario. So to constantly consume the news cycle just isn’t what I should be doing. I feel like I would know if something major or important happened…but I feel like today’s society has really gotten us used to ALWAYS CONSUMING SOMETHING. I’m trying to keep up with sources like Mosheh and The Morning Brew to get SOME kind of daily update, but it’s not something I’m constantly looking for anymore. Reaching for my book over my phone I am ATTACHED to my phone. I pick it up more than I pick up anything else in my life. And I kind of hate it. For a while, I wasn’t even mindful of how much I was reaching for it. But once I noticed, I REALLY NOTICED. And I started really hating that I was just constantly going for my phone. When I think of it like this: There’s absolutely NOTHING urgent on my phone that I NEED to be picking it up that much. But I still do. I fall into the mindless scrolling/checking notifications hole, and it takes This is a habit that is HARD to kick. I’ve been trying to keep my book next to my bed so I can pick that up instead of my phone. Less spending I’ve always been an impulse buyer. If I want something, I’ll buy it. Even if I don’t need it. And I really want to try to do the opposite. For instance, I started making my coffee at home every week day and only buying it on the weekends. I was notorious for skipping Hello Fresh meals and just ordering DoorDash…and I cannot believe how quickly that adds up. So I’m trying to get more into that and cooking 3-4 times a week. I also OVERDID it over the holidays — I was buying anything and everything during the really awesome J.Crew sale. So I’m trying to not buy anything for January because there’s just no need. Plus, everything is Spring forward and I’m not ready to give up my sweaters. I really want to check back in on this post every few months to get myself reacquainted with these actions. What are some ways you’re trying to do to live a healthier lifestyle?!
I bought my first yoga mat in college. Okay fine, my mom bought it for me. Through the years, I’ve tried a bunch of different mats. Honestly, if you’re a beginner, I wouldn’t be too concerned with spending all of your money. But don’t just pick up an any ol’ mat. Mats are obviously very important to yoga practices. Of course, you can really do yoga anywhere and on every surface, but there’s something oddly special about stepping onto a mat you love. amazon Price: $20-22 While I cannot speak to this personally, this mat has gotten some good reviews. Honestly, you get what you pay for though. I’ve been reading that you get a few months of good use out of this mat. It’s a thicker mat, which is great for spine, knee, and hand/wrist/elbow support. This mat also comes with a free mat strap! gaiam Price: Start around $21, and goes up based on premium styles My very first yoga mat was from Gaiam. I signed up for a 3-credit course in college because I really wanted to learn the practice. This mat was the one that got me through a year or so of my beginner practice. For the cheaper options, I do find they are a little less supportive (I like a medium-thickness with my mats). I know their mats have good non-slip surfaces, and also come with a lifetime guarantee. Bonus points for being made with sustainable materials (latex free, no harmful phthalates). manduka Price:$44-146 I was introduced to Manduka when I started dating Nick. He absolutely LOVES Manduka, and I’ve learned to love their products as well. The two mats I am a BIG fan of are the eKO series and the GRP series. Their great for different reasons, but seriously cannot go wrong with any of them! GRP: This lightweight mat is still heavy duty. I originally purchased this mat because I went to a lot of hot yoga classes, and hated feeling like I was slipping if I didn’t bring my own mat. The “lite” version is better for travel, and it is designed to have no-slip grips no matter how much you’re sweating. They use a charcoal-infused rubber technology to absorb sweat and eliminate odor. Even though I’m not going to hot yoga classes (UGH, can’t wait), I still use this mat for daily practice and yoga sculpt classes. eKO: As I started brainstorming for this post, I acutally purchsed the eKO Lite mat for my at home practice — it’s the mat I’m using above! This mat feels naturally grippy, and I really do enjoy practicing on this mat and I don’t lose grip at all. Another great selling point of this mat is that it’s eco-friendly and biodegradable. If you’re looking to (eventually) lug your mat around, the SUPER LIGHT 1.5MM is probably your best option. The main difference between these mats are basically how they’re made. The main benefit of the GRP mat is the stickiness capability. The mat stays in place and I can definitely vouch for that. jade Price:$40-179 I’ve never owned a Jade mat, but I’ve used them at different studios. I enjoy these mats a lot , but never looked into buying. I find a lot of stability with these mats, so if you’re looking for something on the higher end — these are for you! They’re also eco-friendly. And for every mat sold, they plant one free! Yoga mats are personal preference, and you definitely need to find one that makes YOU excited to get on your mat and practice.
I know, I know. Yoga isn’t for everyone. So that means hot yoga might not be for everyone. But let me tell you why I love it. I started doing yoga in 2019 as a way to supplement my SoulCycle classes. Fast forward to now, I’m pretty much only doing yoga. Back in 2020 during peak Covid, I was doing yoga 5 times a week. I felt stronger than ever. I loved everything about yoga – I loved feeling in tune with both my body and my mind. It’s really been SO good for me for the mental and physical aspects of my body. It still works for me. I enjoy a vinyasa style class…specifically when it’s hot yoga. Once you get used to the idea of being in a hot room (around 80-90 degrees), I think you’ll find that hot yoga has some additional benefits — think: detoxing and cleansing your body! PS: I’m not talking about Bikram (that’s probably my least favorite type of yoga). Benefits of hot yoga Reduces stress Detoxifies your body Aids with healthy weight loss Increases flexibility Strengthens your body Increases your heart rate Ups your lung capacity Good for your skin Prevents back pain (if done correctly !!!) Challenges your body and mind It’s ok to be a hot yoga beginner Whether you’ve just started practicing yoga or are finally ready to try a hot yoga class, I recommend sticking with an “all-levels” class. These are actually the classes I’m most comfortable in as well. Proper form and alignment is one of the MOST important parts of yoga — and it keeps you injury free! The more understanding you have of yoga, the poses, and how to modify poses/use props, the most comfortable you’ll feel in a hot yoga class. Once you get over the fear of being the new person in a yoga class, you’ll soon see that no one actually cares about what you look like. Everyone truly is there to focus on themselves and their own yoga practice. Before the hot yoga class While “prepping” for a class might seem so crazy, it’s pretty much just like any other work out! WATER, WATER, WATER. There is nothing worse than being dehydrated during a hot yoga class. Drinking a lot of fluids will only help your body get used to the temperature in the class. LAY OFF THE TACOS. Don’t eat 2 hours before class, especially if it’s your first class. When you’re full of indigested food in a hot yoga class, you MIIIIIIGHT not feel so great. If you NEED to eat something before a class, try a banana! GETTING DRESSED. I’ve seen it all in a hot yoga class. When it comes to getting dressed, I would leave the shorts in your drawer. I know what you’re thinking…if it’s a hot yoga class, why wouldn’t I wear shorts?! Well here’s the thing — you’re about to get SWEATY and DRIPPY. Leggings (or at least a pant that covers your knee) help prevent slipping. Trust me, you’ll be able to hold poses longer and will less effort in pants/leggings. During the hot yoga class When you step into the room, you might feel overwhelmed for a minute. For me, I legitimately start sweating ALMOST immediately. It’s important to breathe and continue to check in with your body. You might feel lightheaded, nauseous, or dizzy. While it’s cool to challenge yourself, taking a restoration pose (like Child’s Pose) will allow you to rest and readjust to the heat. And remember: take small sips of water even if you think you want to chug your entire gallon water bottle. I think it’s always SO important to remind yourself that yoga is never a competition. I’ve found that no one REALLY cares about your practice when you’re in a group class. Take care of your body, recognize its strengths AND its limitations. Being so in tune with your body will allow yourself to be careful when it comes to overdoing it — which equals less injury. Another important thing to note is that even though your body might feel extra bendy and limber during hot yoga, you should still be careful when it comes to pushing yourself. A few weeks ago, I thought my hips were loose enough for full on Pigeon Pose…and turns out I strained my hip flexor (it was pretty painful for a couple of days). Things you’ll need during class There’s nothing worse than feeling unprepared in your hot yoga class. Here are the things I NEVER leave home without. When you’re super thirsty or just need a break from hot yoga, the last thing you want is a sip of HOT WATER. I fill my Hydroflask with cold, cold, cold water before class and it stays that way even when you’re in the heated studio. Yoga mats come in all shapes, sizes, and budgets . I personally swear by Manduka. I still am LOVING their GRP 4mm mat for hot yoga. The “lite” version is better for travel, and it is designed to have no-slip grips no matter how much you’re sweating. They use a charcoal-infused rubber technology to absorb sweat and eliminate odor. I also use this mat bag to bring my bag to and from class . Slipping when you’re in a pose is scary and obviously dangerous. Even if you have a mat designed for hot yoga, you still need a full length hot yoga towel to help absorb the sweat dripping onto your mat. While there are some towels that have grips on the bottom, I don’t love the idea of spending $$$ on towels. I picked up a few of these hot yoga towels from Amazon and they definitely do the trick. Actually, I found the same brand has a sticky version for a few extra dollars , so I’m going to test those out too! I also use a small microfiber hand towel . I leave it at the top of my mat and use it for my hands and arms when I’m feeling EXTRA sweaty. It’s also a necessity for when sweat gets into your eyes in the middle of Downward Dog;) I think I need to start wearing a headband to class to minimize this because there is NOTHING worse than sweat burning your eyes! Usually the studio has blocks available, so I also highly recommend placing those at the front of your mat before class. Things you’ll need after class COOL, you just finished your hot yoga class! I usually stay after Shavasana for a few more minutes to allow my heart rate to fall even more and get a few more stretches in before leaving the studio. Now I will say, the LAST thing you’re going to want to do is put clothes on, BUT it’s a must. I always bring sandals and an extra pair of clothes to change into for my walk home from the studio. Trust me, you’re going to want to do this — my clothes are literally DRIPPING after a hot yoga class. When it’s winter, you DEFINITELY need to make sure you’re bundling up or else you’ll allow your body to become prone to tightening up. And just like before class, you need to DRINK, DRINK, DRINK. You lose SO much fluid during a hot yoga class, and you need to allow your body to recover immediately after. I like chugging water and picking up a green smoothie on the way home from class! Although I don’t like coconut water, a lot of teachers recommend drinking it after class! And there you have it! My tips on taking and surviving a hot yoga class!
